About Chichen-Itza
Chichén Itzá was founded by the Itza Mayans in the 6th century and dedicated to the god Kukulkán: The feathered serpent.
The meaning of the name Chichén Itzá is “mouth of the well of the Itza,” referring to the Sacred Cenote that you can still visit, considered the entrance to the underworld. It is in this place where most of the sacrifices for the gods; were made.
The growth of Chichén Itzá as a center of power in Yucatán was quite late, as well as many of its most prominent constructions were influenced by the Toltec civilization.
Although the initial time of the city was peaceful, the more power, the more conflicts with neighboring towns grew, The continuous fights derived from the fall of the city and its abandonment. However, the impressive legacy was already built and would withstand the passage of time and new invaders; until today.
